Pies

I know they're not supposed to be healthy, even tho' some brands (not of the Russell variety)claim to have the Health Foundation "tick"....I love a good pie. I prefer the mince variety, not fruit mince tho - they should be banned as far as I'm concerned. I will never forget the disappointment I felt having been offered a Christmas Mince Pie, biting into it and...ew, what the hell is that? I thought, no actually I shuddered. Anyway, I digress.

Mince pies of the meat kind is my kinda pie. I even eat them cold. Yes, cold.

BUT apparently thats not as odd as the WAY I eat 'em. I confess, I take their tops off, then I eat them. I peel off the pastry, or the mashed potato top, and put it to one side. And then I eat the pie. I am told that is odd. I don't believe it, surely there must be others out there somewhere who do this? I do eat the top eventually, but only after I have devoured the rest of the pie.

How do you eat yours? I love my pies this way, they taste better. You bet.

I shouldn't find your pie picture and pie words attractive.....but I love pies !

I love chicken and mushroom pies. They have to be served upside down so I can eat the soft pastry at the bottom first and then work my way through the filling to the crispy pasty at the top. Not sure why that works for me but it does!

Hi Villager - I'm glad to have fed your naughty cyber-food!

Steve - Oh I love chicken pies too but my all time fave would be the mince. Haven't heard or seen anyone over here doing the upside-down scoff. Maybe you're the only one?

Scotch Pie, every time. All that peppered mutton in crispy, potato-ish pastry. Hot or cold. It's best to start with the side furthest from you, and eat from right to left in a dwindling concentric spiral.

BT- that sounds absolutely delicious! I remain convinced that the way one eats a pie does indeed impact on how it tastes.

My wife and daughter make beef or chicken pies all the time.

I'm just not that into them.

The way you eat your pies, is exactly the way I used to eat them, when I was a kid, & still ate red meat. The top last was the best part of some pies.
Now, I only eat them, if I have made them, & mostly prefer vegetable.

I also do the upside down thing with pies!

And I love cold mince pies. There is a shop here that sells the most amazing pies and I buy their Bridies and eat them all cold (room temp) for breakfast.

Erm, sorry Sagittarian, don't like pastry or pie filling, so I'm kind of stuck, though I force down the odd mince pie (of the kind you hate!) at Christmas! However these are very small.

However I like biting the top of a filled choclate and then eating the fruity innards so I guess I do a similar thing with stuffed chocolates. Oh and the tops of certain kinds of covered biscuit.

Mike - beef and chicken. Yum. You're missing out, mate!

Meggie - yay!!! Maybe its a Kiwi thing?

Violet - oh I eat 'em cold too. Always have really which was useful when the kids were small and it was hard to drink a hot cuppa tea let alone a hot pie!

Poet - choclates are good too! My 11 year old like to suish the Cadbury mint chocolates onto her thumb and suck the thing to death!!

I am more of a suet pie kind of girl. I love steak puddings. I eat all the suet, except the base, before I tackle the meat, then I eat all the meat and then the little circular base last of all.

My son, Harry really loved black pudding as a tiny child. We went to Christmas at my parents' and he was handed a dish with Christmas pudding in it and his little face lit up cos he thought it was black pudding. Then my mother came round with custard and he started crying "no put custard on my black pudding". He refused to eat the Christmas pudding when he realised it wasn't sheep's bladder or whatever horrible stuff is in black pudding.

I love sweet mincemeat though - I sometimes just scoop spoonfuls of it up and scoff it. Yum yum!!!

RB - I can't wait til you visit here! I am sure you will find the perfect pie in the South Island of NZ!!

Ah yes, and when I find something I like I just eat and eat and eat and eat. You will be amazed how much I can eat when it is something I like! If I like NZ pies I'll go back to the UK ten tonnes heavier.

Oh and I have to drink and drink and drink and drink as well . . .

I agree that mince (fruit) pies ought to be banned. They always taste of soap to me.

I like a good pork pie myself... but not the ones that are fully of jelly and no meat.

Well I dont eat meat, but I do love a nice spinach pie......or a leek and cheese one......or a mushroom one!! Pastry is lovely....
But xmas mince pies.....yuck! Disgusting!

RB - I don't think finding a drink, drink, drink will be a problem!

Rol - a good pork pie is hard to find! Which reminds me, there is a good Kiwi movie called Goodbye Pork Pie...one of those classic movies that really made a statement about Kiwi culture in the 70s.

Justme - ah another person with good taste!
