Is it just me?

Is it just me, or does everyone feel like this.....

after they're approached/accosted in the supermarket to see if they want to "self check-out?"

No, I say, and if I ever do get that depressed they can be sure they will be the first to know. This thing really annoys me, you don't get your groceries any cheaper because you're doing the checkout job FOR EVEN LESS than the pittance they pay the workers anyway. Its mad becasue they usually have a staff member assigned to that particular check out too.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy sod today?

I have never used a self checkout. Ever. Mind you, I shop online. So in a way I guess I do check myself out. Every week.

Damn.

Hi Sagit, how'd you get that picture of me when I woke up this morning ??? I feel like that every day until I've had breakfast and coffee ! Whic is what I'm going to go do right now...

As for your question on the 3 pawed (tri-legged) cat post, no, I wasn't using a tri-pod, but I hopped around on one leg while taking the pictures to try to empathize with him and set him at ease... he was one friendly cat too, just couldn't get enouhg attention.

Here in France I've only seen self-checkout starting up in one store so far, and suppose it's just another ruse dreamed up in back offices by the grey suited profit mongers to put people out of work and make our world once again a little less human and more machine like... For some reason two King Crimson songs from long ago comes to mind : 21st Century Schizoid Man, and "Confusion, will be my Epitaph"...

Hope all is smashing well in New Zealand, and don't let the corporate greed bastards turn you into a grumpy sod !

And @Steve,
Steve, we had already guessed that you have been checking yourself out every week ! LOL !

I admit I HAVE used the self checkout but only when I was in a hurry, early in the morning, and I only bought a few items.

They use valuable employee time to "accost" you to use the self check out? That is totally insane. We only have one grocery with it and I refuse to go near those check outs with all their annoying beeps and and vocal instructions. Then again, I used to refuse to use self serve gas stations, too and now that's all we have. So the end of service at all is nigh.

But, I love that pic!

I thought self check-out was another term for suicide !

I wouldn't mind stacking shelves, but would hate to work on the checkout.

Steve - The mental imagary in your comment....
Owen - haha, actually looking back thru some of my older posts and I have noticed that I have used that photo before! As for NZ, today it is very chilly!

Tenon- well, as long as you were in a hurry...

Violet - hi there kindred spirit! That photo I took in Oamaru in their old part of town.

Villager - I agree, thats what it sounds like to me too!

Frequently Sagittarian. Though I'm not in a hurry to help them phase out the checkout operators either, albeit not above using a self-check out occasionally if the conventional queue is unbearably long & I am in a hurry.

I also will not even bother to try out self checkouting, thats what the assistants are there for. I would most likely do it all wrong and be hauled into the office for shop lifting1
Telemarketers annoy me, the ones that want to give you cheap toll calls when you mention that you don't make any!

Hi Laura, I know what you mean about being ina hurry..so far I have hopped from foot to foot and resisted even that.

Glennis - hello there! You are almost a neighbour being in that part of NZ, so welcome very muchly! As for the telemarketers...when they phone now and usually ask for Mr or Mrs *** the kids just say "Hang on a minute" and then put the phone receiver on the breakfast bar...where it stays until one of us hangs it up!

Ah a woman after my own heart.

I refuse to use those things and it really annoys me to see the young chap standing there trying to get people to use them. In the shop I go to they have six of those and two members of staff 'assisting' customers. They only seem to be well used at lunchtime when people pop in for a sandwich and a bottle of drink (not THAT kind of drink cos you can't buy those at self-check out cos of the age check).

I like to be served by a real person and I shall resist for ever.

My wife always does that goofy self-checkout thing and I alway ask her why she insists on doing the store's work for them.

Even if I only have one item I let them check me out. It's good for the economy.

The Sagittarian said...

RB - see, I figure you and I would never get the chance to use self-checkout on the basis of all the wine in the trolley!!

Mike - I agree with you wholeheartedly! The really annoying aspect is the staff member they have assigned to help you at the self-check out...why bother?

I used to avoid the self-checkout for similar reasons and also because they intimidated me.

Now I use the one in my local store as often as the normal check-out.

There are four of them and they have one employee on hand AND they don't try to pressurise you to use them. The assistant is there to authorise alcohol sales, in the main.

I tried it out once when there were queues at all the manned checkouts and none at the self checkouts.

I found it quicker and now am a dab hand at getting done and dusted more quickly than if I stood in a queue behind the pensioners and all those prats who can't pack properly and/or then have to rummage around for their cards to pay as though they are surprised that payment is actually involved.

And don't talk to me about the occasional idiot who decides, at the very end of a long check out, to disappear to change a product.

I make game of the self check out, passing the bar codes over at different angles and adopting silly poses. That 'bleep' is quite satisfying.

I haven't passed an item under my leg yet.

Think about it; if all of us who have posted on here were wanting to check out who'd get through quicker?

Also, I find the assistants more useful and helpful when I'm actually DOING the shopping. Most stores (I've worked in one) take greater care in providing service on the shop floor now than previously so the 'interaction with people' thing will always be there if you want it.
