Its only words
Ok, so here is a very short story written by me...mostly made up of song titles. How many song titles can you find....there is a part 2. Play if you want. Just comment with the number of songs or list them by title. The winner who gets all the song titles, gets to help me finish this one! If they want. Wow. Gee. Thanks. Rol probably has a head start???
It was a Hot August Night (c) Amanda Stephens (and there ends yet another mystery)
She got out of the big yellow taxi and shimmied across the sidewalk. Of all the crusty juke joints in town, she had to shimmy into mine. Seeing her again here at Club A Gogo, something got a hold of my heart.
“Baby, it’s you!” I hugged her close but couldn’t help wondering why she was here?
“Yes, it’s li’l ol’ wine drinker me.” She purred
“What’s new, Pussycat? I haven’t seen you since that rainy night in Georgia.”
She smiled slowly. I knew I was a sharp dressed man. She sat her well-rounded tush on a bar stool. She was a long tall woman in a black dress. I’d known Victoria since we were oh, very young. I never could forget that time in the summer of ’69……….whatever she wanted I knew I’d do. Even after all this time she could still play me.
“Do you wanna dance?”
“No”
“Wine?” I asked but she was a hard woman to please.
She wanted one Bourbon, one Scotch and one Beer.
Seated at a table by the window, I watched her with her drink.
“There’s something on your mind –you know with me you can tell it like it is.” I smiled at her encouragingly. She didn’t answer right away then she said yeah.
I had another long drag on my drink. I was becoming comfortably numb then she finally spoke.
“I fought the law and the law won. Help. I’m not cut out for a chain gang.”
She explained the shoot out in detail.
I didn’t know how I was going to help her. Victoria started to shake.
“Little girl – I can’t believe it” I stared at her for a long time. Was she teasing me? I was undecided.
Suddenly three men resembling underworld thugs burst through the door, they were obviously searchin’.
“We’ve gotta get out of this place”, I whispered then grabbed her hand and I ran.
‘Take it easy” she panted, running to keep up with me. We ran out of the green door, across the street and into the lobby of the Hotel California.
“We’ll be safe here.”
We looked at each other. I desperately wanted a cigarette but I knew she hated it when smoke gets in your eyes.
“I’ll never be safe again.” She uttered quietly. At that moment, I just wanted to be seduced.

This is fun!
I came up with 20 on my first reading.
I have at least nine songs in my head now, thanks!
I found 35! Should I put the titles in a sealed envelope or just whisper them to you through the ether?
Great fun, Amanda! Tell my why you asked for help in writing the sequel, though. You've done such a great job here. I can't wait to find out what happens next! You really got a hold on me!
PS.Forgot to say that I really like this photo.
WV: aeffine "It is aeffine photo, indeed!"
I found 30 odd. Loved the line:
“I fought the law and the law won. Help. I’m not cut out for a chain gang.”
Jeez Saj, did you spread your whole collection out on the floor and then do a last tango with them all ??? (errr, collection of vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, MP3s, etc, is what I meant) Well, if Lynne found 35, I can't top that, but what a mix ! Just don't try to play them all at once...
WV is "sersa", which is a new style of music derived from salsa, but a little terser...
That has made me laugh so much. You're very clever.
(I found them all by the way. Yeah! Just don't want to put the others off by saying exactly how many!!)
And ...uhmm ....not that I'm dependent or anything but WHERE'S THE TUESDAY TIPPLE???
Violet - Am glad you had fun, hope the songs are ones you want in your head!!
Louciao - wow, 35! Didn't she do well, y'all. I took that photo in a bar in Kakanui, the guy standing in the background had such a crooked hooter that I wanted to capture it but didn't quite manage it. As for the sequel, I have it there...just offering it up for anyone else with nothing to do!
Steve - thanks, it was actually rather fun to do.
Owen - oddly enouogh that was pretty much what I did, just kept rummaging about until I found the right words! We must be psychic twins!
Selina - haha, of course you found them all! I'll put part 2 up before I highlight 'em for the rest. Yes, Tuesday Tipple will be late...it's on its way however. I was a tad 'indisposed' yesterday...
Saj, you are really a good writer! A la Raymond Chandler! This was fun! I want to give my list now, but how do we submit? I think my favorite one-liner was, "What's new, Pussycat? I haven't seen you since that rainy night in Georgia." This was really good, Saj.
Margaret - gee thanks, you're very kind. I just was a tad bored one afternoon and thats when I get mischievious!! As for the list you can email me amanda.nzmwu@clear.net.nz
Saj, I have a confession to make here: I cheated on this contest!! Yes, I knew the majority of the songs cleverly hidden in the story, but some only seemed like they should be song titles...so I looked them up on You Tube. I count 13 that I wasn't familiar with, so I guess I recognized 23. Still not bad, eh?
Obviously, I had a bit too much time on my hands as well.
I guess I forfeit the crown? How fleeting glory.
And what's with my WV: blimp!? I know I've gained a bit of weight lately, but really!
Louciao - well done anyway, I have to say that I went thru about 1,000 of our CDs to do this so I think I'll retain the Time on My Hands crown if thats ok? Love the WV!!
Retain the crown? Darling, you wear it well!
