Discovering the past

The kids are back to school today, although as a working mother this really isn't a big deal for me. However, it is fun to get them outta bed earlier than they have been used to!

This morning I also decided to gather up a few videos to take in to the photo shop and have them put onto DVD. The trouble is I have a video marked (Scowly Teen) 1 , with no sign of 2. I can't recall if I even HAD a second video for her...I found our wedding video too, plus a video made up of old Super 8 film shot by my father of our adventures on the Chatham Islands when we lived there in the mid 60s/early 70s, plus footage of Mum and Dad's wedding in the early 50s - all of which I am keen to see again, and to make the kids watch again as well.

I think it is really important to try and preserve family history, I admire those families who have clear records going back centuries! The Stud has a family tree going back to Italy in 1700s - great reading.

Aren't these old tiles lovely? They are surrounding an old shop near my work, the Council did a good job of preserving them and others around the city, one of the few things this council is any good at (altho' having said that, the same council tore down an old building from 1880s - selective historic salvation.)

While I'm down memory lane, does anyone else recall when the TV used to finish transmitting at mid-night? Here in NZ they used to play the clip below, and then you knew it was time to turn off the TV for the night. Very cute. Sigh,. when did life get so complicated??

JBar - thank you! You have some great shots on your site.

The Sagittarian, thanks. It's quite possible that the sign warning of the devious seagulls is still around somewhere. Of course, the area around the Opera House has changed so much since the 1980s. There are quite a few upmarket restaurants and bars around there these days.

JBar, we were in Sydney last year but only cruised past the Opera House...maybe we should visit again and try a walk around it.!

Never underestimate the importance of the old family tree. I'm curretnly scanning in my grandparents old photographs - which is taking forever - but it's a lovely feeling to have them backed up (and then backed up again) digitally on various hard drives. Hopefully my sons will take good care of them and add to them too.

I remember you posting these clips before and I was enthralled with them. I bookmarked it and for ages would go back to youtube and play one or two every night, just to put a smile on before bed.

Steve, I'm sure your boys will thank you for all the work you're doing now and will carry on the tradition.

Violet- It is one of fave memories...am thinking of a cheese ad for the next one!

I love old family pix--my own, but pretty much anyone else's as well. Like Steve, I've got a bunch of my grandparents' photos; unlike Steve I have not yet scanned them. I fear that once I start, I will be caught up in endless Photoshopping. My family was very pleased with themselves for getting a bunch of old slides and home movies onto one video...now I guess it's all got to be put onto a DVD. I'm sort of missing good old photo albums.

That sign-off tv spot is sweet. Canada's used to be a drawing of an Indian chief's head. I don't know why.

Guess it was "my good friend" Søren Kierkegaard, who said, that one "has to live life forward, yet understands it only backwards."
And yes, about a complicated life... wishing you all a wonderful Tuesday.
