Taking the cat on holiday

Many years ago now when I left on the traditional "OE" (almost a rite of passage for Kiwi's - the Big Overseas Experience), I was packing my case and took a breather.

When I cam back, my dear (now departed) tabby Lucy had obviously decided she was coming too! In this photo, to me she looks like perhaps she is dreaming of the places she will go, the mice she will chase and the other cats she will meet...and probably the food she will devour.

When we were kids my Dad made his own caravan and we had many a fabulous family holiday in it. One year we were going up the Coast, and were some miles from home when we noticed our cat (the now dead Tinker - a beautiful silver tabby) asleep on the top bunk, visible by a small window Dad had made in the 'van. We had to turn around and take her home again. I think we left the following day again, but without Tinker.

Thirsty Thursday

I've been away, scouting about the bars of another city! (No really, I've been away with WORK. But of course, you guessed that.)

Still, no time like the present to relieve one's thirst, I always say.

Rhett Butler

30ml orange curacao
30ml Southern Comfort
15ml fresh lemon juice
15ml fresh lime juice
ice
soda water

Pour curacao, Southern Comfort, juices and ice into a shaker...shaaaaaake, then pour into a highball glass. Top with soda water. Garnish with an orange slice and mint leaves.

Guaranteed to make you not give a damn, my dears. If you want to relive a real "Gone with the wind" experience, have this with onion rings.

Monday Musings

I have decided to post this photo again, I posted it years ago and yet I still keep going back to it. When I first posted it I didn't know the complete story behind the photo and have since been brought up to date.

I have been told that this cross, which is actually fixed to a roadside fencepost as is often the way over here to commemorate road side deaths, belongs to a young girl of about 8 years old who was struck and killed by a car as she was crossing the road.

This area had been flooded when I took the above photo, and as it has been cropped here is the original site.

New beginnings

From the gnarly trees and grey skies who have been exposing themselves for the past month or so, to the cheeky blossoms and blue skies beginning to appear....

To the daffodils who are beginning to shout and wave from the garden beds...

and to the wild roadside poppies.....

Nature has truly started her new beginnings!

Tuesday Tipple

I feel a bit of Vodka abuse coming on....

Caipiroska

1 teaspoon palm sugar
1 lime, cut into eighths
1/2 cup ice
60ml Vodka
1/2 cup crushed ice

Place palm sugar and three quarters of the lime in a shaker, and crush with the back of a spoon or end of a rolling pin. (Or use a muddler - they are much more fun and you look like you know how to make cocktails if you own one of these babies!)

Add ice and Vodka and shake. Pour into a glass with crushed ice. Garnish with remaining lime wedges and two short straws. I'd use and old-fashioned glass for this.

OK, now let's boogey like we did in the 80's...here is a new Kiwi band, what do you think?
