Olympics bollocks, I say!

Steroids anyone?
Drug cheats going cheap.
Made in China.

Sorry, am cynical for one so young - tragically. The gloss of the Olympics is lost on me these days. You watch a wonderful race (and I confess that I am rather partial to watching the re-runs of the men's sprints...all that lycra in slow motion...purrr!) and then find out that the winner was taking something illegal. The gals and I did stay up late to watch the opneing ceremony and it was spectacular, although my 10 year old did state that the amount of money they spent on that they could have spent on rehousing those who were run outta town/lost their homes so that the "birds nest" could be built in the first place. We talk alot about current events in our house. The kids are encouraged to join in and they know their opinions count for something - a trait I suspect will come back to bite us on the bum soon enough!

What about you, do you watch this extravaganza with excitement and expectation...or do you run to the DVD store?

BTW - we actually had 2 days of sunshine this week...woke up this morning to find snow everywhere again! Honestly, have had more snow this year than we usually get at all. Fun! Snowmen and wet clothes everywhere.

I kind of half watched the ceremony... like you innate cynicism prevented me from being swept along with the admittedly impressive ceremony... I just kept laughing inwardly at China's pronouncements of their one world, one dream rubbish. But then it matters not which country hosts the games... we all have skeletons in the cupboard. The Olympic ideal is a good thing to aspire too but we kid ourselves I think if we assume that we're playing the game properly...

I am cynical. Just sit & stare at the waste of money. As your children say, it could be far better used. I think these particular games are really rotten, in view of cheating, Tibet, the oppressive regime. I seem to be a voice in the wilderness, so I usually keep quiet.

Yep. I'm far too cynical to watch that crap. I wish I wasn't, but I am.

Steve, Meggie and Mike - welcome to the Cynical Games. Are we taking bets on how many cheats there are? Might dredge up some interest if they take the games way back to their origins, same games and dress code as in the Olden Days....yeah.

Every two years, I tell myself I will not watch, but each time I get swept up in the drama. At least for the athletes who don't cheat, I want to see their moment of glory. And I admit to thoroughly enjoying the opening and closing ceremonies.

Another thing I enjoy is learning so much more about the host country - the good and the bad - than you get out of just the news.

Our Olympics in 2012 is basically just an excuse for the government to bulldoze the rest of the East End of London in favour of 'Olympic Villages' and the like.

And how our bulging-already public transport system in the capital is going to cope, I shudder to think. Have a horrible feeling we may even see some fatalities amidst the crushes.

Avoid London in 2012 folks.

You're right about the drugs though Sagittarian - it's all a farce these days anyway - wherever they hold it. And if they're all on drugs, surely that levels the playing field all over again so that no one's gaining!!!!
