A blast from the past

When I used to live in another city (in another life ago) I didn't have such a broad music interest as I seem to have now.

My ex used to like being out and about without me, and being young and boring I would often find myself home alone with nothing but a bottle of red and some melancholy music for company. Mostly I didn't mind that, in fact nowadays the idea of being home alone for more than half and hour at a time sounds positively ideal! Anyway, I think one of the real tests of one's music tastes in when you find that old CD, or (gasp) vinyl album years later and replay it and find that you either get a third of the way into the first track before heaving it out the nearest window - or whether you can still enjoy the music. To be honest, there were all kinds of emotions playing along with that music too. I doubt the same emotions come into play with melancholy stuff years and happiness later!

I stumbled across my old Julia Fordham vinyl album, tucked away behind my Matt Bianco record but far away from my Quiet Riot record.....to this day I really love this track!  I always wanted hair like hers, and blue eyes and those long legs and.....however I digress.....How has your music taste weathered over the years?

So, yesterday it was you first at my place, today it's me first at your place (I think, unless someone slips in while I'm typing this)... great timing Sis...

So, I'm really curious, what comes after "blue eyes and long legs" ??? Looks like you're really digging deep in the music cupboard these days ? Doing some Spring cleaning ??? Never heard of Julie before, and had trouble watching the video that kept jumping scenes, but she has a sweet voice... is that the part of her you wanted also ??? I'm betting you were singing along with this... am I right ?

Well, good luck finding a little peace and quiet... with teenagers in the house, that's not easy I guess...
Cheers !

You're brave to make the Matt Bianco admission, Sag !

Oh she is rather lovely! Great body and wonderful eyes. But somehow her voice (which is great) doesn't go with the look of her! I'd like the song, or to watch the video but the combination didn't work for me!

Mostly I am still fond of the tracks that were important to me years ago (as long as I don't overplay them!) but there are some that make me cringe, mostly soppy songs that kind of worked when I was trying to get over someone but just sound pathetic now.

But music has great power to take us back, doesn't it? There are still records I cannot listen to unless I am alone because I know I will cry!

God, I remember this... those deep chocolatey vowels that seemed to flute upwards so effortlessly. Ah. How I loved the eighties. And still do. God knows enough of its music infects my MP3 player. I remember being resistant to Frankie Goes To Hollywood at the time (they were too popular) but listening to the tracks now I'm blown away by them. Of course, most of that is down the production and the musicians (nicked from Ian Dury's band so I've been led to believe).

Owen - Well, I never so much as sang along more like drank along...

Villager - I know, I took a risk mentioning that eh? :-)

RB - yeah, that voice does seem like it belongs to someone else. I went online and found out that she is till performing and so on, but ran out of time to listen to her more recent stuff. Must do that!

Steve - I'm actually going to an 80s party this weekend, I shall be the one running headlong down memory lane!!

I'm looking forward to checking out this video when I get home (still in Québec). I must admit, I mostly missed the music of the '80s. My daughter tells the story of being embarrassed in Grade 3 when the teacher asked all the kids who their favourite pop group was and she had to admit that we only listened to classical radio at home (and I don`t mean goldie oldies!) It was also interesting that in her latter teen years she discovered a lot of the groups that I had liked when I was her age, in the 1960s. Unfortunately, my clubbing years were when I was at art school, in the
'70s and disco was in. I had a lot of musician friends at the time and we all hated disco (though I did go out dancing to it at gay clubs).

Wait a minute, this is your blog! Sorry about hogging all this space. Boogie on, raggae woman!

BTW...I always wanted to be tall with long straight blonde hair--exactly opposite to what I am.

Louciao - My husband claims to have missed the 80s as well, mind you he is full on Blues mostly (with a bit of Jazz and Soul thrown in. I was still at school in the 70s and disco was in there for sure (even in Greymouth...)oooh, musician friends how wonderful! I have managed to be blonde but apart from that nadda!! Unless hazel eyes are the new blue? And 5ft 3" the new 6ft??

Blues, jazz and soul? I think I might get along very well with your Stud. As for hazel eyes, 5 ft. 3 in. -- totally the new 6 foot blue-eyed blonde!

My musical taste has hardly changed. I grew up listening to motown and the rolling stones - and how can you NOT like motown and the rolling stones? In my formative years (10-14) I listened to a lot of TLC and the spice girls which is embarrassing, obviously, but still hold a bit of nostalgia for me.

Louciao - ah, a gal after me own heart! Bless you indeed. Yes, the Stud is quite easy to get along with really - just keep the Blues blasting and the wine glass full and he's anyone's!

Deirdre - hello, The Scowly Teen had a thing for the Rolling Stones when she was 2 (thank gawd Bill Wyman never found that out!!) and that also meant we kinda missed the Spice Girls altogether! She still has their Bridges to Babylon poster on her wall tho', even tho' she know thinks they're only 'good, cos they ain't pretty!". Teenagers.

Brilliant track, though I don't get the African references in it.

And sadly her 'Woman of the 80's' track has not worn well.

I try not to remember my youth too hard - grim and depressing times. I am so much happier (and strangely enough, younger) now.

What a blast from the past! I did love that track even though it's very Radio 2 (okay that maybe doesn't mean much to you being an NZer, but it's a very middle of the road radio station over here that plays nice, tasteful ballads and the like). And do you remember "Woman of the 80s" and "Where Does The Time Go", Amanda??

As I've got older I've learned to appreciate wider range of music types.

At 18 it had to be the likes of Led Zep or the WHO etc. I also liked Classical music of various kinds.

Now I like Abba too!

Ok, where's that Saj sis hiding ??? narry a hide nor a hair of her seen of late, these past few days... is she lost in a mountain pass in the alps ? We'll be sending out the Saint Bernards soon to search... (of course with a good strong tipple in the little barrel around their necks !)
